No smoking/vaping policy: examples

You can decide whether or not you need a stand-alone smoking or vaping policy. It's not statutory, but many schools choose to have one.

Take a look at these examples from other schools. If you're developing a policy from scratch, use our guidance on how to do that, 

Primary examples

Marlow Church of England (CofE) Infant School in Buckinghamshire's policy states that:

  • Smoking and vaping are not permitted on site
  • Visitors to the school will be informed about the policy
  • The school will provide support for any staff who want to give up smoking

Hill Top Academy in Doncaster aims to:

  • Provide a 'no smoking or vaping' environment
  • Equip pupils with the social skills to resist peer pressure to smoke
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle

Kirk Smeaton CE Primary in North Yorkshire uses its policy to set out the rationale behind its no-smoking approach, including that:

  • Passive smoking can make children more prone to chest illnesses
  • Non-smokers are in the majority
  • Schools have a big role to play in helping non-smoking be seen as the norm in society

Secondary example

Southmoor Academy in Sunderland has a policy that states that the academy will:

  • Encourage pupils found smoking or vaping to seek health advice. This may include a referral to the school nurse
  • Dispose of smoking or vaping-related items in accordance with the trust's behaviour policy
  • Ask pupils where they got their cigarette or vape, and may make a complaint to trading standards, if appropriate

Special school example

Rowan Gate Primary School in Northamptonshire sets out objectives, including to:

  • Help children know and understand the harmful effects of smoking and vaping, through its science and PSHE curriculum
  • Provide knowledge and information to help pupils make responsible choices
  • Protect pupils from inappropriate role models

Take a whole-school approach by linking your policy and curriculum

You should have a co-ordinated whole-school approach to smoking and vaping, including in your PHSE curriculum.
